Willet FlyBy At Brigantine

As I was photographing birds out in the water at the Brigantine Division of the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge this Willet flew close by me. I managed to get a few images as it went by.

Willet Shorebird – Eye To Eye with Prey

I came across this Willet looking for a meal at J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Sanibel, Florida. These are from a visit years ago. I was using a Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 lens on a Canon 1D MkIII. These are all at 800mm. It caught a small reddish orange crab that seemed to only have one eye. It was trying to swallow it but as it was trying it lost its grip and was holding it by one leg. Then that leg broke off and the crab fell into the water. But it managed to catch it again and have it’s meal.  I thought the crab got away but the Willet won in the end.Eye2eye_Willet_800mm_3-8_1DmkIII_v1_80I9608-2Eye2Eye_Willet_800mm_1DmkIII_80I9613-2Eye2Eye_Willet_v1_oops_800mm_3-8_1DmkIII_80I9615-2Eye2Eye_Willet_oops_800mm_3-8_1DmkIII_DD_80I9616Eye2EyeWilletRecov_v1_800mm_3-8_1DmkIII_80I9618-3

Squawking Willet

We went to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge over the weekend. It was a very gray overcast day. Which worked for closeup images, but was dull for subjects in the distance. But it was a fun day out anyway. This is the first time we have been here since they reopened the completed fixed Wildlife Drive. Before you only could use a very small section then had to turn around. I was surprised to see so many Black Skimmers in large groups. It was so windy it was hard to open the car door, so what was flying usually had a hard time getting where they were trying to go. Some just blew sideways or had very erratic flights. Very difficult to smoothly track in flight subjects. So a lot of my images were of subjects on the ground or in the water. I saw this Willet on a mound in front of some grasses. It posed for a while so I got quite a few images. Shot at 400mm with a 1.4x teleconverter.Willet v2 Brig_v1_43G0687Willet v2 Brig 5 17_43G0690Willet v7 brig 5_17_43G0689
